FIRE EMERGENCY

Your safety is our concern. In order to make your stay safe and secure, we would request you to kindly familiarize yourself with the below information.

IN CASE OF FIRE
You are in a building that has been constructed incorporating stringent fire safety standards, with modern fire prevention system. All floors and rooms are fully equipped with smoke detectors and sprinklers. However, in the unlikely event of an emergency due to fire, it is best for you to be familiar with the following basic life safety recommendations. Please do take a little time to read this.

UPON ARRIVAL
On entering your room, study the emergency exit plan on the back of the entrance door.

PREVENTION

  • Do not mode on the bed.
  • Do not empty ashtrays into waste paper bin. Exercise caution when using matches or lighters.
  • Please ensure electrical appliances are turned off or unplugged after use.

IF YOU NOTICE FIRE / SMOKE IN YOUR ROOM
Stay calm. Turn off the air conditioner. Take your room key with you. DO NOT stop to take any possession. Leave the room. Close the door behind you to inhibit the spread of fire alarm. Call the Operator at extension “9” and report your name, room number, location and the nature of fire. Walk to the nearest exit, walk down the stairs and leave your room keys at the Front Desk. Front Desk personnel will guide you to refuge area. Hold the handrail while walking down the stairs. Close the door behind you to prevent the spread of fire into the stairwell. Do not use the elevator during a fire emergency.

IF THERE IS SMOKE IN THE CORRIDOR
Stay calm. Stay as low to the ground as possible. Crawl close to the walls to the fire exit door close to you.

IF YOUR EXIT IS BLOCKED
Stay calm. Go back to your room.
Should your stairwell start to fill with thick smoke, and your exit turns out to be unsafe, return to your room and call the Operator at extension “9”.

IF YOU CAN’T LEAVE YOUR ROOM
Stay calm and stay there. If you cannot exit, your room is the safest place to be.
Shut off the air conditioning. This will prevent smoke from being sucked into your room. Push wet towels under the door and in air vents to stop smoke from seeping in through the cracks & gaps. Remove all curtains from the windows in case fire should enter through a window, no fabric should be nearby.
Call the Operator at extension “9” and give your location. Stay calm, keep relaxed.

EARTHQUAKE SAFETY PROCEDURES

Introduction

It is not possible to prevent earthquakes or change the likelihood of an earthquake occurring. However, we can greatly increase our chances of safety and survival, by being aware and prepared. Since knowledge and preparation are keys to your survival during and after an earthquake, you should take steps to become informed.

Dangers Associated with Earthquakes

  • The actual movement of the ground in an earthquake is seldom the direct cause of injury or death. Most casualties result from falling objects and debris or collapsing structures. Injuries are commonly caused by:
  • Partial building collapse, such as falling masonry, collapsing walls, falling ceiling plaster, etc.
  • Shattered / broken glass from broken windows.
  • Overturned bookcases, filling cabinets, fixtures, furniture, office machines and appliances.
  • Fires, broken gas lines, etc. These dangers may be aggravated by lack of water due to broken mains.
  • Fallen power lines.
  • Inappropriate actions resulting from panic.

Earthquake Safety Guidelines

  • Remain Calm. If you stay calm, you will be better able to assess your situation.
  • If you are indoors, stay there.
  • If you are in danger:
  • Get under a sturdy table, desk or bed.
  • Brace yourself in an inside corner away from windows.
  • Move to an inner wall or corridor. (A door frame or the structural frame or inner core of the building are its strongest points and least likely to collapse. They will also break the impact of any falling objects).
  • In an apartment building the safest place is by the central reinforced core of the building, which is usually located by the elevator well.
  • Choose shelter which will provide an airspace if it collapses. If your furniture shelter moves, stay under it and follow it around the apartment.
  • Watch for falling objects – plaster, bricks, light fixtures, pots and pans, etc.
  • Stay away from tall shelves, wall cabinets and other furniture, which might slide or topple over.
  • Stay away from windows, sliding glass doors, mirrors.
  • Grab anything handy (blanket, pillow, tablecloth, newspapers, box, etc.) to shield your head and face from falling debris and splinting glass.
  • Don’t be alarmed if the fire alarm or sprinklers go off.
  • Do Not Rush Outside. Stay on the same floor that you are on. Stairways may be broken and exits jammed with people. Do not use elevators as the power for elevators may go out and leave you trapped. The greatest danger from falling debris is just outside door- ways and close to outer walls. If for safety reasons you must leave the building, choose your exits as carefully as possible.
  • If you are outside, stay there. Move away from the building, garage, walls, power poles and lamp posts. Electric power lines are a serious hazard – stay away from fallen lines. If possible, proceed cautiously to an open area.
  • Avoid Fallen Power Lines. The possibility of encountering fallen live wires is great during and after an earthquake. If you are on foot, make a wide path around the wires. If you are in the car and live wires have fallen across the car, remain where you are. Your car is usually well insulated and will protect you from electric shock. Never assume that downed power lines are dead.

IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY,

Take a break from it all and get to know your surroundings. Our city is filled with many interesting and easy-to-get-to services, attractions and points of interest.

ABOUT THE CITY

Darjeeling is a town and a municipality in the Indian state of West Bengal. Nested in the Himalayas, Darjeeling is situated at an altitude of 2134 meters. The name of the town has been derived from โ€œDorje Lingโ€ meaning the place of Dorje-the Mystic.

It is located in the Lesser Himalaya. It is noted for its tea industry, the spectacular views of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest mountain, and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Darjeeling is the headquarters of Darjeeling district which has a partially autonomous status within the state of West Bengal. It is also a popular tourist destination in India.

The development of the town dates back to the mid-19th century, when the colonial British administration set up a sanatorium and a military depot. Subsequently, extensive tea plantations were established in the region, and tea growers developed hybrids of black tea and created new fermentation techniques. The resultant distinctive Darjeeling tea is internationally recognized and ranks among the most popular of the black teas. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway connects the town with the plains and has some of the few steam locomotives still in service in India.

The varied culture of Darjeeling reflects its diverse demographic milieu consisting of Gurkhas, Bhutia, Sherpas, Lepcha and other mainland Indian ethno-linguistic groups. Darjeeling, with its neighboring town of Kalimpong, was a centre of the Gorkhaland movement in the 1980s. The town’s fragile ecology has been threatened by a rising demand for environmental resources, stemming from growing tourist traffic and poorly planned urbanization.
